As the residents joined us from their wards, each volunteer spent time assisting one or two individuals, sharing conversation and offering companionship over afternoon tea. Laughter filled the room during a lively game of bingo, with cheers for every winner and smiles all around. These moments, simple as they may seem, reminded us of the importance of slowing down and giving our full attention, even if just for an afternoon.
At the end of the visit, as we cleaned up and gathered for a short debrief, there was a shared sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to give back, especially our elders in the community, and for the warmth we received in return. The afternoon also reminded us of our place beyond ourselves, as part of a wider society, and of the importance of ensuring no one feels left behind.
As our HR team shared, the time and energy given despite busy schedules made the experience more meaningful. Though it was a small gesture, it was one rooted in kindness, commitment, and the shared belief that showing up for others matters.
